Southwark

Depositions of Witnesses taken at [..] the
Parish of Saint Thomas within the Borough of
Southwark in the County of Surrey this 11th day
of January 1797 on view of the Body of James
Savill now here lying Dead.

Samuel Agan< no role > of the black Man Blackman Street
Southwark Victualler maketh Oath that the deced James
Savill has lived with him as a Servant about ten Months
that he was between 16 & 17 years of ageThat he has been very
sickly the whole of that timethat on Friday Morning the deced
sayed to Dept. that his Cold was much worse that he coughed very
much and told Dept. he must quit his Service which he agreed
to do that in the Evening of that day the deced returned to Dept.
house and Dept. and he settled with respect to his Wages after
which the deced asked Dept. told him sleep there that Night
which Dept. agreed to & told the deced he might sleep there until
he got another placethat the deced slept these that Night, also
on Saturday & Sunday Night followingDept. went out on
the Monday Morning and returned at about eleven in the
Evening of that day Dept understood the deced was then in
BedDept. [..] desired his Servant George Green< no role > to go to Bed
Green went up the Stairs & in about a Minute came down
& sayed to Dept Master something is the Matter with James
for I see bloodDept. and Thomas Savill< no role > (brother to the deceased) went up stairs
to a middle Room on the two pair of stairs floor of Dept. home
on going into the Room Dept. saw the deced lying in the Bed
the bed Cloaths over him Dept. went to the Bed side and
saw blood upon the Pillow Bolster & Bed Cloaths Dept.
asked the deced what was the matter the deced sayed he did
not knowDept. & Thos. Savill< no role > lifted the deced up by the
Arms & then discovered a Wound in his ThroatDept. asked
the deced who did that (meaning the Wound) the deced sayed
he did it himselfDept. asked the deced the reason why he
did it or what he did it forthe deced sayed he did not know
that the deced looked as if very uneasythat a Surgeon also
had been sent for came soon afterthe Surgeon examined the
