Informations taken this Twenty third day of
May 1768 at the Parish of St. James within the
Liberty of Westmr . in the County of Middlesex upon
an Inquisition touching the Death of James Garland< no role >
Esqr . lying dead in the said Parish Liberty & County.

William Lighton< no role > late Servant to James Garland< no role > the Deced
in the Capacity of Butler on his Oath saith, That he has
Served the Deced upwards of fifteen Years last Past and need
to Travel with Deced, Says that he had been out yesterday
Morning on Business and returned about Eleven o'Clock
and being informed that the Deced had asked for Dept. he
immediately went to Deced, who told Dept. that he
wanted him to go to Dr. James, but that he would go
himself, and accordingly went out, and returned in
about a Quarter of an hour, Says that he [..]
Changed his Clothes and said that he would take a Ride
with his Brother Mr. Nathanael Garland< no role > who was
going to Epson , and they both went out together about
Twelve oClock, Says that Deced came home to his House
in New Burlington Street in the Parish of St. James Westmr
about half an hour after one o'Clock the same day, Says that
he let the Deced in and delivered a Message, the Deced
walked briskly thro' the Hall into the Pack Parlour or
Dressing Room, saying that he had either forgot or left some
Papers, Says that he asked Deced if he should take off his
Boots, to which he answered No, upon which Dept. Shut
the Dressing Room door and went out leaving the Deced
in the Room alone, Says that he went into the Kitchen
and stayed there about eight or ten Minutes when he
heard his Mistress (Mrs. Garland) come down Stairs, from
the First Floor, and go into the Dining Parlour, and then
attempt to open the Door between that Room and the
Deced's Dressing Room or Back Parlour, Says that he heard
her immediately come out at the other Door into the Hall
and open the Door leading from thence into the Dressing room
upon which she immediately Screamed out aloud Says
