An Inquisition Indented taken for our Sovereign Lord the King at London that is to say
at the Parish of All hallows the Less in the Ward of Dowgate in London aforesaid on the
Sixteenth day of August in the thirtieth Year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord George
the third by the Grace of God of Great Britain France and Ireland King Defender of the
Faith Etc. before Thomas Shelton< no role > Gentleman Coroner of our said Lord the King for the
City of London and Borough of Southwark on view of the Body of Richard Backhouse< no role >
now here lying dead by the Oath of Stephen Gimber< no role > Christopher Teasdale< no role > John
Bazeley Matthew Johnson< no role > William Horwood< no role > Edward Emes< no role > , William Pugh< no role > , Philip
Shewin Robert Pratt< no role > Pearsefull Nicholls Aaron< no role > Baker John Froome< no role > David Sheene< no role >
and Thomas Dowse< no role > good and lawful Men of the City of London aforesaid who being now
here duly chosen sworn and charged to inquire for our said Lord the King when how
and in what Manner the said Richard Backhouse< no role > came to his death say upon their
Oath that the said Richard Backhouse< no role > on the fifteenth day of august in the year
aforesaid at the Parish and Ward aforesaid in London aforesaid being Bathing in the River
Thames accidentally casually and by Misfortune did Sink under the Waters of the said
River and in and with the Waters of the said River was then and there Suffocated
and drowned, Of which said Suffocation and Drowning he the said Richard Backhouse< no role > did
then and there die And so the Jurors aforesaid upon their Oath aforesaid do say that
the said Richard Backhouse< no role > in manner and by the Means aforesaid accidentally
casually and by Misfortune was suffocated and drowned In Witness whereof
as well the said Coroner as the said Stephen Gimber< no role > the foreman of the said Jurors
on behalf of himself and the Rest of his fellows in their Presence have to this
Inquisition set their Hands and Seals the day Year and Place first above written
