Examination TextThe Examination of Mary Poltney lodging with Mr Far at Mr [blank] a Pawnbroker's the corner of Hewitts Court in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields within the liberty of Westminster taken upon oath this 19th Day of October in the year of our Lord 1767. This Examinant on her oath saith that she is 24 years of age, that she never was married, that she was a yearly hired servant to Mr Beckett a Surgeon in George Street York Buildings in the Parish aforesaid for the space of one whole year at the yearly wages of 6 pounds diet and lodging, quitted the same about two months ago, and this Examinant on her oath saith that she is now Great with child or children which is or are likely to become a bastard or bastards and to become chargeable to the Parish aforesaid, and that John Downing a Drummer belonging to the Surrey Militia did beget her with child or children she now goeth with and is pregnant of, and that he the said John Downing is the true and only father thereof and no man else. Sworn the day and year abovesaid before Peter Planck.
