Examination TextThe Examination of Elizabeth Hillar singlewoman in the workhouse of and in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields passed from the Parish of St Giles in the Fields in the County of Middlesex taken upon oath this [blank] Day of May 1737. This Examinant on her oath saith that she is 28 years of age and never was married, that she was a yearly hired servant to Mr Phillips a Grocer opposite Salisbury Street in the Strand in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields aforesaid for the space of six years and upwards at the yearly wages of five pounds diet and lodging, quitted the same between five and six years ago, that she this examinant never kept house rented a tenement of 10 pounds by the year paid any parish taxes nor hath been a yearly hired servant in any one place for 12 months together since, and further on her oath saith that she is now Great with child or children which is or are likely to be born a bastard or bastards and to become chargeable to the said Parish of St Martin in the Fields, and that Richard Cartwright a Labourer who was lately impressed into his Majesty's service (and further of him she knoweth not) did beget her with child or children she now goeth with and is pregnant off, and that he the said Richard Cartwright is the true and only father thereof and no man else.
