Depositions of Witnesses taken at the
Parish of Saint John within the Borough
of Southwark in the County of Surrey
the 12th: day of November 1790 on view
of the Body of Samuel Panton< no role > now here
lying dead

William Gridley< no role > [..] near the Rose fine feet Lane in the parish
of Saint Mary Magdalen Bermondsey in the County of Surrey
Lighterman maketh Oath that he hath known the deced
Samuel Panton< no role > about fourteen Years that he was also a Lighterman
that between the hours of six and seven in the Morning of Saturday
last the 6th: instt:Dept.the deced was employed in a Lighter belonging
to Mr: Bowen lying near Saint Catherines Stairs [..] in the River Thames
to lead said Lighter with some Corn from a Vessel lying in the
River Thames at a Chainvor Teer called Saint Catherines middle Teer that the deced
placed his feet against [..] a Lighter lying alongside of the one he was
then in and his Back against the Lighter he was in for the purpose of
shoving one Lighter from the other, in doing which [..]
the deced's feet (as Deponent thinks) slept, and he fell between the Lighters into the
Water that Dept. and several other Men who saw [..] deced fall
into the Water did their endeavours to assist the deced but without
effect for in about a Minute and a half the deced sunk under the
Water, and Dept. saw no more of him.

John Wittel< no role > a Lodger at the White [..] publick house situate
in Bank side [..] in the Parish of Saint Saviour Southwark maketh
Oath that about three OClock Yesterday afternoon Dept. in
Company with one Thomas Elmore< no role > being employed in a Boat in an
dragging in the River Thames, near Horsley down Stairs in the parish
of Saint John Southwark they dragged up the body of the deced
that they conveyed the deced on Shore and after acquainting the
deceds friends they left the deced lying on the Stairs.
