Examination TextSurrey to wit, Malachi Gardener being apprehended by the Beadle in the Parish of Saint Saviour Southwark in the County of Surrey, as a Vagabond wandering abroad & Begging and brought before me, one of His Majesty?s Justices of the Peace for the said County, to be examined touching the Place of his last legal Settlement but being unable to give a Satisfactory Account of his Settlement John Haggard personally approved and in his Oath says he is informed and believed that in the Year one thousand seven hundred and seventy seven the Mother of the said Malachi Gardener (then a Widow) lived in and rented a certain Coffee House commonly called Ponds Coffee House in Leicester Fields in the Parish of St. Martin in the ffields in the County of Middlesex & that she has not gained a subsequent Settlement to his Knowledge & belief, And says he does not know that the sd Malachi Gardener ever gained a Settlement by any Act of his own // Sworn this 3d day of August 1786 Before Wm Mason // [signed John Hoggard] // NB, Have examined the Collecting Books & find that his Mother in the Year 1777 kept House, vide Bedfordbury Ward Book // B B Wd // P
