Examination TextThe Examination of Frances Grigsbie in the workhouse of and in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields in the liberty of Westminster and County of Middlesex taken upon oath this 20th Day of February 1739. This Examinant on her oath saith that she is 26 years of age and never was married, that she was on the 22nd Day of November last delivered of a Male bastard child (since christened Frederick) at the house of Mr Crackinthorpe, the corner of Church Lane in the Strand in the said Parish of St Martin in the Fields, and that John Emes, keeping a Milliner's Shop near Charges Street in the Piccadilly had carnal knowledge of her body in and upon a bed at the sign of the Bunch of Grapes near Gerrard Street about the middle of March which was in the year of our Lord 1758 and several times after at the same place at which or one which times he the said John Emes did beget on her body the said Male bastard child, and that he the said John Emes is the true and only father thereof and no man else. Sworn the 20th Day of February 1759 before Thomas Kynaston, Benjamin Cox.
